Default asking for a raise

Do you have any problems asking for a raise? I don't because when I know that I am overworked, I will refuse to allow them to work me like that unless they pay me.

I have never had to ask for a raise, I've always been fortunate enough to work for companies that do yearly evals and it's at those times that my raises usually came. But, I'm also pretty sure that if I did have to go to the boss and ask for a raise, I would do so only if I knew my efforts at work had helped turn a profit for the company. To ask for a raise simply b/c you've shown up for work everyday is most likely not a valid reason for a raise. Extra work, taking on new responsibilities, going above and beyond expectations and a willingness to step up are reasons to deserve a raise.

Well I've reached the point where they've given me all the raises they can justify to their superiors, based on my hard work (never had to ask). And in order to justify any further pay I would have to move into a position of greater responsibility.

I am lucky also in that I have never had to ask. I always knew when I was due a raise and they were really great about being on time with them. But I would not hesitate to ask for one if I felt I deserved one or especially if it had been awhile since my last one.

My company does annual evaluations and raises as well, and they've always been very fair with me. In fact, they're a not-for-profit and their raises are better than the raises of the for-profit company I used to work for. Go figure.

I didn't have problems getting raises back when I worked outside of the home on a fulltime basis, but there was only one place where I had to ask for a raise, also. Most of My jobs had union representation and the raises reasonable.

I think you should have a blueprint of your reasons why you should get a raise. If you feel as if this is something that should happen have your reasoning lined out. Plus it makes you look serious when it comes to you asking.

And sometimes you just don't want to take on that extra responsibility. So, you have to either be happy at the wage you're earning or take that step into 'bossdom'.

Oh that is so true. I wish I could remember the number of times I turned down the recommendation for a promotion. If I had wanted that job I would have applied for it!
