Default Extra work

Have you ever had a manager walk up to you and say "I need someone to do this job, and we don't want to hire anyone new. So you can do it, and also all the work you're already doing. No, there isn't any more money in it."

I resolve to do the work I'm getting paid for, and maybe this other thing if I'm bored. Maybe if I'm lucky they'll even give it to someone else

This happens all the time and you normally get a bollocking if you fail to finish your normal workload in time

Yeah, so I'm just doing my normal work, since I get a bonus for finishing that, and I get nothing for finishing the other thing

Yes, unfortunately that does happen all too often in the work world. Sometimes you are given new tasks that take up a lot more time but are not given a raise.

In my previous work assignment, it happens all the time since I have many superiors considering I was the youngest in our team before. In my current work, it still exists but since the group I am working with is smaller, there are lesser tasks to accomplish and they have lesser tasks to assign to me

Well at least they never managed to catch me out with the "Go and ask for a long weight" jokes.

I have had that happen, without them being nice enough to ask. It seems like if you ever offer to help with something, it becomes part of your job.

I've had this happen as well and I've always taken on the extra responsibilities, b/c in the end it led to a promotion with higher pay. An employer needs to know who is going to step up to the plate and get things done. This is how they learn who the effective leaders will be.

I don't know about that. It tends to become a part of your job which they assume you've been compensated for and forget that it was a favour you were doing them. ("They" being a generalization of anyone higher up than you )
