Default Are multifunction machines reliable?

I remember it used to be the case that multifunction machines had a bad reputation for reliability - ie, if one feature stopped working, everything stopped working.
However, have multifunction devices improved? If I bought a multifunction now, and 2 years from now some feature stopped working (ie, the scanner) then should I expect to be able to still use the other features (ie, fax)?

I have one (HP 6330) that is crap, but I am sure that there are some that are better.

I have a Brother MFC 9700 that I love. I had problems at first but got a replacment. Since then, it's been running strong.

Brother makes a good machine. Anytime I've had an issue they have been quick to respond. It's nice....rare anymore...but nice!

I have always shyed away from multifunction machines for that reason, Emma, and because manufacturers tend to make a better product if they are only focusing on one thing rather than multiple functions.

just my 2 cents though.

I've found that to be true but changing over the years. Thank the Japanese. They needed multifunction machines because space is so limited there. It's made everyone improve.
