At Display 2008 exhibition in Tokyo last week Sony unveiled an OLED (organic light emitting diode) screen that is just 0.2 millimetres thick.

The thinnest screen ever developed, it was showcased as a 3.5 inch panel screen with QVGA resolution (320×240 pixels). It started out life as a normal OLED screen, but was ground down by Sony to just one-fifth of a millimetre.

Sony also showcased an 11-inch OLED TV screen at just 0.3 millimetres thick. Despite the screen’s thinness, it has the same resolution of its predecessor, the XEL-1, which was 1.4 millimetres thick.

OLED screens are able to be made so thin because they emit their own light. They consume less power than LCD screens, handle fast moving images better, and give good colour representation.

Because of these obvious advantages, it is expected that in the near future OLED screens will repleace LCD screens as the screen of choice for most manufacturers.

A group of Chinese hackers has called off a planned attack on the CNN website after fears that their plan had been foiled.

The hackers’ plan to attack at the weekend ended up being widely reported across the web after The Dark Visitor, a Chinese hacking website, revealed the plan on Friday morning.

The attack was planned to protest at all the “anti-Chinese” media coverage in the West. CNN was chosen because it is perceived to have given biased coverage of the Tibet protests in the run up to the Beijing Olympics this summer.

Participants in the hack were told to flood CNN’s website with traffic to overwhelm its capacity and knock it off-line.

CNN’s website was attacked for a short period on Thursday, causing users in Asia limited access. However, CNN said that the effects of the attack were “imperceptible”.

The weekend attack was called off because too many people became aware of it, leading to what the organisers called a “chaotic” situation. Another attack is planned on an “unspecified date” in the near future.

As anticipated the price of the iPhone as dropped as has happened in Germany and the US.

The Uk network provider O2 and the Carphone Warehouse have cut the price of Apple’s iPhone by £100 and the 8GB is now available for £169, although the recent 16GB model will not be subjected to the same price cut.

Following the German carrier T-Mobile who announced that they were dropping the price of the 8GB iPhone to €99, O2 have followed suit as the rumours of the arrival of the 3G iPhone expected this summer.

This follows O2 change of tariff which reduces the cost of owning an iPhone as it includes 600 anytime minutes and free text messages and internet browsing available form just £35 per month.

The main hurdle that is slowing the release of the 3G version seems to be the problematic battery life, as it was originally scheduled for release earlier this year.

Apple chief executive Steve Jobs has said that the 3G version will be available shortly.

Although analysts have also read into the price drop as a sign that the iPhone sales are not reaching their target as a result of still opposition from Nokia and Blackberry following a report in the Financial Times.

According to technology consultancy Detica many UK banks do not have the technology in order to comply with new codes on consumer debt management.

The UK voluntary Banking Code means that both banks and building societies must offer greater personal support consumers heading into debt problems, initially beginning with the identification of customers who are at risk of defaulting.

Detica’s research indicates that the majority of UK retail banks are using outdated analysis of customer data which will make them inefficient in identifying customer who are at risk as per the new code.

Maggie Scott, executive manager at Detica’s Financial Services unit has said that the regulatory requirements will mean that the banks will actually have a great deal of data in order built a strong consumer profile, although banks have historically only used the data during the application process.

Detica warned that the banks must not use the data to identify customers that could potentially be in financial stress and discuss possible solutions with customers, as the aim of the new code is to reduce debt spiraling out of control.

The UK banking code now places the onus on the lenders and the creation of a culture of responsibility and will benefit both the banks and the customers as it will be a primary measure to curb financial stresses in the current economic climate.

This represents a 31% increase in profits compared to the $1 billion made by Google in the same period last year.

Net income on-year increased 42% at $5.19 billion.

The rise in profits saw Google’s share price reach over $500 for the first time since February.

Internet watchers such as Hitwise and comScore had been reporting that Google’s paid-click growth had hit a slowdown, resulting in a decline in Google’s share price. Now that Google’s results tell a different story, share prices are expected to continue rising.

Last month Google completed its acquisition of DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. DoubleClick specialises in targeted online adverts based upon the websites visited on a computer.

The existence of too many security companies in the market is causing information overload for IT managers, according to experts.

As the security market is becoming flooded with the creation of companies like mushrooms, IT managers are becomes overloaded with security information, products and services.

Check Point founder Gil Shewd has warned that there are too many products some of which have not been rigorously tested and that means that there are products for “every buzzword in the industry”.

Assuming IT managers had unlimited budgets they would still not have enough time to become familiar with the products available in a particular market, and it is this delineation and sudden expansion of the industry that Shewd has pinpointed as problematic.

The biggest threat to security is the fact that those I charge to do not even have enough time to asses even ten percent of products and so do not keep a watchful eye of developments which results in security holes and increased failures in the system.

With over 700 security vendors in the market, many of which niches firms is it increasingly difficult for companies to cross this current minefield and Shwed calls for the market to consolidate and become accessible.

With Tesco announcing record profits, it was actually the company’s Internet sales that was its star performer.

Internet sales increased by 31 per cent in 2007 to £1.6bn, whilst profit was up 40 per cent on the year before to £124m, as the supermarket now boasts one million online customers, as well as an increase in new business to the tune of 20 percent.

It broke its revenue target of £150 million by posting sales figures of £20 million.

The improvements have been put down to more improved order selection, better logistics in regards to delivery and stock availability.

Unlike it nearest rival Ocado which made trading losses of 7.1 million, tesco’s competitive advantage is in the use of local stores as distribution hubs rather than a designated warehouse for online sales.

Tesco chief executive Terry Leahy has put Tesco’s growth down to the sound business model which has coped admirably despite the adverse market conditions.

The supermarkets phone and online business Tesco direct has also been boosted by the availability of products and better service levels.

The financial improvements have been put down to increased efficiency, which has saved the business more than £350 million pounds in 2007.

The application of energy saving cross functional projects a key note in these savings due to improvement in the supply chain and the introduction of new checkout technology for stores helping to increase efficiency and drive down costs.

The company has also outsourced its administrative support and IT branch creating 3000 new jobs in India.

A survey has found that almost half the internet’s users in the UK and the US use the same password for all their internet accounts, whilst 12% of users have illegally logged on to another person’s unsecured wireless connection.

Having the same password for all accounts puts users at extra risk from hackers, as only one account needs to be hacked to steal all of that person’s private data. Yet only half of the internet’s users bother to switch passwords for their different internet accounts.

Just 7% of internet users change their passwords frequently.

A less popular but still prevalent trend was Wi-Fi piggybacking - logging on to another person’s unsecured wireless network.

Although piggybacking is illegal, with culprits in the US and the UK being arrested and charged, one in seven US survey respondents said that they had piggybacked on an unsecured network, whilst the figure in the UK was one in 11.

Unsecured networks are easily hacked into because the data sent over them is unencrypted and can be read by anyone with simple hacking skills.

The survey was carried out by Accenture, who conducted telephone interviews with 800 US and UK residents. All respondents had high-speed internet access at home, and logged on to a password protected account at least twice per week.
