PS3’s unofficial iPlayer

by Peter Charalambous

An announcement by Nintendo last week meant that the Nintendo Wii has become the first console to officially get the BBC’s iPlayer service.

As a result developers have responded and have created a portal that has allowed Sony PlayStation 3 users to have access to the BBC iPlayer, and the hack allows them to stream BBC’s online content via the console onto their TV’s at home.

The unofficial PS3 iPlayer site is evidence that it is possible to also support PS3 using the already developed Wii version.

The hack works by masking the agent string of the PS£, making only just a few changes to the Java script in order for the PS3 to work effectively.

The developers have called for the BBC to create an official version, after announcing that the patch only took a day to create, although the BBC is still delaying on further releases of the iPlayer on other consoles.

The main reason for this is likely to be the fact that both Microsoft and Sony have been cautious due to the fact the there is little control over the content that is being streamed on their consoles.
